The Myles Standish Monument State Reservation is a special place in Duxbury, Massachusetts. It's a historic park that belongs to the state. The main feature of this park is a tall, 116-foot granite tower. On top of the tower stands a statue of Captain Myles Standish. History of the Monument
Building the Tower
The idea for the Myles Standish Monument started a long time ago. A special ceremony took place on October 7, 1872. About 10,000 people gathered to lay the first stone. However, building such a big monument takes a lot of time. It wasn't fully finished until 1898.
The monument stands on Captain's Hill. This is the highest spot in the area. It is about 200 feet above sea level. This hill was once part of Captain Standish's own farm.
What the Monument Looks Like
The monument itself is 116 feet tall. It has a small viewing area at the very top. From here, you can see amazing views of the land. You can even see parts of the original Plymouth Colony. A 14-foot tall statue of Captain Standish sits on top of the tower. He is looking out towards Massachusetts Bay. In his hands, he holds the colony's important charter.
Who Owns and Cares for It?
Since 1920, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has owned the monument and its land. This means it belongs to the state. The monument was repaired and made new again in 1988.

Climbing the Tower
If you visit, you can climb the 125 steps inside the tower. When it's open, reaching the top is a great reward. From the viewing area, you can see many interesting sights. These include old lighthouses from the 1800s. You can also spot Duxbury Beach and Plymouth Harbor. On a clear day, you might even see the Blue Hills far away to the northwest.
Exploring the Park
The park also has other fun things to do. You can walk along the trails. There are picnic tables if you want to bring lunch. Sometimes, the park offers special programs. These programs help you learn more about the area's history.
Nearby Burial Ground
Close to the monument is the Myles Standish Burial Ground. This is where Captain Standish was laid to rest. There is another, smaller monument built over his gravesite.
