About Mônica Carvalho
Mônica's father, Sérgio Carvalho, has Polish roots. Her mother, Mary of Graces, is from Bahia, Brazil, and Portugal. Mônica also has a brother named Sérgio Ricardo.
Mônica's Career Journey
Mônica started modeling when she was just 13 years old in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. She loved to sunbathe at the beach, and this led to her first modeling job for a sunscreen brand. After that, she appeared in many other advertising campaigns.
When she was 16, Mônica was chosen as the "Muse Summer River." In 1991, she won the "Scorpion Girl" title at a Brazilian nightclub in the United States. At 19, she decided to become a serious model and joined Ford Models. At the same time, she took acting classes at City College and the House of Art Laranjeiras (CAL). She also studied acting in New York City, where she lived for a while.
Acting Debut
Mônica's first professional acting role was in 1993, in a play called Brazil Underwear. In the same year, she appeared in the opening of the TV show Mulheres de Areia. She also had a role in an episode of Confissões de Adolescente on TV Cultura.
In 1994, Mônica joined the Actors Workshop at Globo, a big TV network in Brazil. She had a small role in Quatro por Quatro. She continued to work on many Rede Globo soap operas, including História de Amor and Chocolate com Pimenta. She also played two different characters in Malhação and appeared in episodes of the series A Vida Como Ela É.... Mônica also appeared on the show Você Decide. She became very well-known in 2001 for her role as Maria do Socorro (Socorrinho) in Porto dos Milagres.
Mônica has been featured on the covers of magazines like Plástica & Beleza, Boa Forma, and Amiga. She also worked on other TV networks, appearing in soap operas like Cidadão Brasileiro and Caminhos do Coração on Rede Record. She played the villain Nara Paranhos Vasconcelos in the soap opera Uma Rosa com Amor on SBT. In 2011, she returned to TV Globo and played the secretary Glória Monteiro in the soap opera Fina Estampa.
Carnival and Charity Work
Mônica is a veteran of the Sapucaí, which is the famous parade ground for Carnival in Rio. She has been parading there since 1991. She has been a featured dancer and even crossed the Sambadrome with the parade board's uniform. She started at GRES Beija-Flor de Nilópolis and was considered the muse of Carnival in 1996 as the godmother of the drum section for GRES Acadêmicos do Grande Rio. She has paraded with this school ever since, only taking a break when she was pregnant.
In 2001, Mônica participated in the "My Star Shines Against Cancer" campaign. In 2002, she played Bartira, an Indigenous woman, in a traditional play about the founding of the village of San Vicente.
Mônica's Personal Life
In 2000, Mônica ended a five-year relationship with businessman Ricardo Santos.
During Carnival in 2001, she started dating Armindo Junior. In 2004, they had a daughter named Yaclara. The couple's relationship ended after her pregnancy.
In 2009, Mônica married Alaor Paris Junior.
