Na'vi facts for kids
The Na'vi are a special group of people who live on the amazing planet of Pandora in the movie Avatar. They are a fictional species, meaning they are made up for the story. They look a lot like humans, with two eyes, ears, arms, and legs. They also have noses, mouths, and show feelings just like people do.
But the Na'vi are also very different! They have bright blue skin, pointed ears, and very large eyes. They also have long tails. Plus, they are much taller than humans, but their bodies are quite slender.
What the Na'vi Look Like
When the movie Avatar was first being planned, the Na'vi were going to look much more like aliens. The director, James Cameron, said that early drawings of the main character, Neytiri, showed her with fins and gills. She even had features like a cat.
But the way they looked was changed to be more like humans. This was done so that people watching the movie could feel more connected to them. Director Cameron said that Avatar is more like "science fantasy" than true science fiction. He planned to explain why the Na'vi look so human-like in a novel.
Na'vi Connections and Culture
The Na'vi have a very special way of connecting with the animals on their planet. They can literally plug their ponytails into the animals' nerve systems. This allows them to communicate and share feelings.
To become a strong warrior, a Na'vi must learn to ride a creature called an Ikran. This is a big flying animal that they bond with. The Na'vi also use this special connection system to form a deep bond with a "life partner." This bond is very strong and lasts for their entire lives.
The Na'vi Language
The Na'vi language is a special language that was made just for the movie. It is called a constructed language. Actors learned to speak it when they played Na'vi characters.
A professor named Paul Frommer from the University of Southern California created the Na'vi language. He designed it so that human actors could speak it easily. The language uses syntax and grammar rules from real languages. Professor Frommer made up more than 1,000 words for the Na'vi language. He taught the actors how to speak it perfectly for the movie.
