ʻālehu is a small community located in Hawaiʻi County, on the island of Hawaiʻi in the United States. The name Nāʻālehu comes from the Hawaiian words meaning "the volcanic ashes."

This community is special because it has one of the southernmost post offices in all 50 states of the United States. The United States Census Bureau calls Nāʻālehu a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area defined for counting people and collecting statistics. In 2020, about 811 people lived in Nāʻālehu.

Where is Nāʻālehu Located?

ʻālehu is found near the very southern tip of the island of Hawaiʻi. It's part of the Kaʻū District.

To its west, you'll find the community of Waiohinu. To the southwest is Discovery Harbour. Both of these are also CDPs, but they don't have their own post offices.

The total land area of Nāʻālehu is about 5.6 square kilometers (2.17 square miles). All of this area is land, with no water.
