The Naga Morich is a super-hot chili pepper that comes from Northeast India and Bangladesh. People in the Sylheti region also call it Naga Moriç. This chili is famous for being one of the hottest peppers in the world! It's the only naturally growing chili pepper that can reach 1 million SHU on the Scoville scale. That's incredibly spicy! Some people wonder if it's the same as the Bhut Jolokia, but experts are still discussing if they are truly identical or just very similar.
What Makes the Naga Morich Special?
The Naga Morich plant is a small to medium-sized bush. It has large leaves and small flowers with five petals. The peppers themselves are super hot! Like many peppers from the Chinense family, its fruit is incredibly spicy. The Naga Morich is a bit smaller than the Bhut Jolokia. It also has a bumpy, ribbed skin, while the Bhut Jolokia is usually smoother.
Where Does the Naga Morich Grow?
This amazing chili pepper grows naturally in Bangladesh and parts of North East India. You can find it especially in areas like Nagaland, Manipur, and Assam.
But it's not just in Asia! The Naga Morich is also grown in other countries. Farmers in the USA, the United Kingdom (where a type called Dorset Naga is grown), and Australia grow it. They often use these peppers to make fiery hot sauces. You can even find fresh Naga Morich peppers sold in supermarkets in Finland!
How Is the Naga Morich Used?
The Naga Morich chili is extremely hot, but it also has a special taste. It has a sweet and slightly tangy flavor, much like the Bhut Jolokia (ghost pepper). After that, you might notice a hint of woody or smoky tastes. Because of its unique flavor, this chili is great for BBQ and grilling. Just be careful, because it's super spicy!
