Nail (anatomy) facts for kids
Your nails are hard parts on the ends of your fingers and toes. Most people have ten fingernails and ten toenails. Fingernails and toenails are alike, but toenails grow much slower. Only some mammals have nails, mostly primates like monkeys and humans. They are made from a strong material called keratin, just like the claws of other animals.
Just like your hair, nails keep growing. You need to trim them sometimes. It does not hurt when you cut your nails. Nails are made of a protein called keratin. Your hair and skin also have keratin. Some people paint their nails to make them look nice.
Sometimes, a nail can grow into the skin around it. This is called an ingrown nail. Ingrown nails can be painful. Doctors can often treat them. The care and painting of nails is called a manicure.

What Do Nails Do?
Nails have several important jobs. They help us in different ways:
Protecting Your Fingers
Nails help protect the tips of your fingers and toes. They keep the soft parts around your fingertips safe from bumps and injuries. Think of them like little shields for your digits.
Helping With Small Movements
Nails help your fingertips feel things better. When you touch something, the nail pushes back. This helps your finger pads feel more sensitive. Even though the nail itself has no nerves, it helps your fingertip sense things.
Nails as Tools
Your nails can also be useful tools. For example, you might use a nail to pull out a small splinter. They can also help with gentle scraping or picking actions.
For Display and Art
Many people, especially females, use their fingernails for nail art. They decorate them with different colors and designs. This is a fun way to express yourself.
