Najeeb Tarakai (born February 2, 1991 – died October 6, 2020) was a talented cricketer from Afghanistan. He played for the national team in important international matches. Najeeb played in twelve Twenty20 International (T20I) games and one One Day International (ODI) game.
He first played for his country at the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 tournament in Bangladesh. In local cricket matches, he scored over 2,000 runs in first-class games. Najeeb was also part of the Afghan team that won a silver medal in cricket at the 2014 Asian Games.
Playing Cricket in Afghanistan
Najeeb Tarakai started his Twenty20 cricket journey with the Afghan Cheetahs team. This was during the Faysal Bank Twenty-20 Cup. He played against teams like Rawalpindi Rams, Faisalabad Wolves, and Multan Tigers. In these first three matches, he scored 54 runs. His highest score in these games was 34 runs.
In September 2018, Najeeb joined the Nangarhar team. This was for the very first Afghanistan Premier League tournament. He was a key player for the Speen Ghar Region team. In the 2018 Ahmad Shah Abdali 4-day Tournament, he scored 719 runs in ten matches. He was the top scorer for his team that year.
Najeeb continued to shine in the 2019 Ahmad Shah Abdali 4-day Tournament. He scored 670 runs in just five matches. This included an amazing four centuries (scores of 100 runs or more) in a row!
Playing for His Country
Najeeb Tarakai made his international debut against Bangladesh. This was at the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 tournament. He played two Twenty20 International (T20I) matches for Afghanistan in 2014.
On March 10, 2017, Najeeb played a fantastic game against Ireland. He scored 90 runs in a T20I match. His great batting, along with strong bowling from Rashid Khan, helped Afghanistan win. Najeeb earned his first "man of the match" award for his performance.
He played his first One Day International (ODI) match for Afghanistan on March 24, 2017. This game was also against Ireland.
A Sad Farewell
On October 2, 2020, Najeeb Tarakai was in an accident. He was hit by a vehicle while crossing a road in Jalalabad. He suffered a serious head injury. Najeeb was taken to a hospital in Nangarhar and had surgery. Sadly, he passed away four days later, on October 6, 2020. The Afghanistan Cricket Board confirmed his death.
