Naji Talib Arabic: ناجي طالب (born 1 July 1917 – died 23 March 2012) was an important Iraqi leader. He served as the Prime Minister of Iraq from 1966 to 1967. He took over this role after Abd ar-Rahman al-Bazzaz.
Early Life and Family
Naji Talib was born in 1917 in a city called Nasiriyah in Iraq. His family was quite well-known and owned a lot of land. His father was a landowner and also the mayor of Nasiriyah. He was even a member of parliament.
Military Career
Naji Talib studied at the British Military Academy from 1936 to 1939. This is where he learned to be a soldier. Later, in 1954 and 1955, he worked in London as a military attaché. This means he was a military officer working at an embassy. By 1958, he was a Staff Brigadier and commander of an infantry brigade. When he retired from the army, he had reached the high rank of Major General.
Political Journey
In 1956, Naji Talib was in charge of the Senior Officers School in Baghdad. During this time, he suggested that Iraq should unite with the United Arab Republic. This idea was supported by many important people.
In 1957, Naji Talib became a leader in the Free Officers Movement in Iraq. This was a group of military officers who wanted to bring about changes in the government.
Naji Talib held several important jobs in the government:
- He was the Minister of Social Affairs from 1958 to 1959.
- He became the Minister of Industries in 1963.
- He served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1964 to 1965.
- Finally, he became the Prime Minister of Iraq from August 1966 to May 1967.
Later Years
Even after his time as Prime Minister, Naji Talib remained involved in important events. In 2004, he offered to join a group trying to help the city of Falluja. This group wanted to visit Falluja and talk to people there. Their goal was to find a peaceful solution to protect the city and its people.
In 2005, Talib also worked as a negotiator for the Sunnis in Iraq. He passed away on 23 March 2012, in Baghdad, at the age of 94.
