Nanette's Early Life
Nanette Salomons Cohen was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 1764. Her parents were Shlomo ben David Cohen-Chazzan and Sara bat Mordechai Brandeis. Her family was part of the Jewish community in Amsterdam. Nanette's grandfather, Barent Cohen, was a successful merchant.
In 1785, Nanette married Isaac Heymans Pressburg. He was from Nijmegen, another city in the Netherlands.
Life in Nijmegen
The Pressburg family was well-known and successful in Nijmegen. Isaac worked as a textile merchant. They were important members of the Jewish community there. Isaac was a hazzan, which means he led prayers and sang in the synagogue. His father had been the rabbi of the same synagogue.
Nanette and Isaac first lived near the synagogue. Later, in 1808, they moved to a bigger house. Nanette passed away in Nijmegen in 1833 when she was 69 years old. Her husband had died the year before.
Her Children and Famous Family
Nanette and Isaac Pressburg had five children: three boys and two girls. Their children were Hijam, Henriette, David, Marcus Martin, and Sophie.
Henriette and Karl Marx
In 1814, Nanette's daughter Henriette married Heinrich Marx. They got married in the Nijmegen Synagogue. After their wedding, they moved to Heinrich's hometown of Trier. Heinrich was a successful lawyer there. Henriette and Heinrich had nine children, and one of them was Karl Marx. Karl Marx grew up to become a very famous philosopher and economist.
Sophie and the Philips Family
In 1820, Nanette's other daughter, Sophie, married Lion Philips. Lion was a tobacco merchant. Sophie and Lion moved to the Dutch town of Zaltbommel. After Nanette passed away, Lion Philips helped manage her family's money. Karl Marx, who was their nephew, sometimes visited the Philips family. He also wrote letters to Lion often.
Lion and Sophie's grandson, Gerard Philips, later founded the famous Philips Electronics Company in 1891. This company makes many electronic products we use today.
Family Connections
Even though Henriette and Sophie and their families later changed their religion, they stayed in touch with their mother, Nanette. One of Karl Marx's younger brothers was even born in Nijmegen.
Nanette's sons also had interesting lives. David became a lawyer in Amsterdam and later in Surinam. Marcus stayed in Nijmegen and worked in the tobacco business.
