Nanga Parbat is a giant mountain in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. It stands 8,126 metres (26,660 ft) tall, making it the ninth highest mountain in the entire world. Its name, "Nanga Parbat," means "Naked Mountain" in Sanskrit, which fits because some parts of it are so steep they don't hold much snow.

This amazing peak is located in the western part of the huge Himalayas mountain range. It's the most western of all the mountains that are over eight thousand meters high. You can find it south of the Indus River, in the Astore District of Gilgit-Baltistan. Not too far north, you'll find the western edge of the Karakoram mountains.

Climbing Nanga Parbat: The Killer Mountain

Nanga Parbat is known for being very difficult and dangerous to climb. Its slopes are incredibly steep, rising sharply from the ground below. Because of the many climbers who sadly lost their lives trying to reach its top in the early and mid-20th century, it earned the famous nickname "Killer Mountain."

First Ascent to the Summit

Despite its dangers, brave climbers have tried to conquer Nanga Parbat. The very first person to successfully reach the summit was an Austrian-German climber named Hermann Buhl. He made history on July 3, 1953, completing a solo climb after his team members turned back. It was an incredible achievement!
