Napeague State Park is a large state park in East Hampton, New York. It covers about 1,364 acres, which is like 1,000 football fields! This park is special because it stretches all the way across a narrow part of Long Island, from the Atlantic Ocean to Gardiners Bay. You can find it along Montauk Highway, between the towns of Amagansett and Montauk. The small village of Napeague is right next to the park.
Park History
The land for Napeague State Park was first bought by a group called the Nature Conservancy in 1976. They then gave it to New York State in 1978. Much of the park is made up of wetlands. These are areas where water often covers the land. Waves from the Great Hurricane of 1938 once washed over parts of Long Island here.
In 1961, a plane crash happened in Napeague. Six people sadly died in this accident.
Exploring Napeague State Park
Napeague State Park is mostly undeveloped. This means it doesn't have many buildings or facilities. It is managed by the nearby Hither Hills State Park.
One of the park's most beautiful features is its clean Atlantic Ocean beach. However, this beach is often closed during the summer. This is because an endangered bird called the piping plover builds its nests there. Protecting these special birds is very important.
Within the park, near Gardiners Bay, you can see a large, old factory building. This area is known as Promised Land. It used to be a fish processing factory.
