History of Napoleon
The land where Napoleon now stands was once part of a large, swampy forest called "the Great Black Swamp." This area became open for people to settle after a big battle called the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794. This battle happened about 26 miles east of where Napoleon is today.
The city of Napoleon was started in 1832. It was named after the famous French emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1843, the Miami and Erie Canal was completed. This canal helped many German immigrants move to the area.
By the 1880s, Napoleon had grown to more than 3,000 residents. Its location on the canal and two different railroad lines helped the town grow. Most jobs at that time were in businesses that made things for local farmers.
