The Narcissus Geyser is a special kind of geyser found in Yellowstone National Park. It is located in an area called the Lower Geyser Basin in Wyoming, United States.
Narcissus Geyser is part of a group of geysers known as the Pink Cone Group. Other geysers in this group include Bead Geyser, Box Spring, Dilemma Geyser, Labial Geyser, Labial's Satellite Geyser, Pink Geyser, and Pink Cone Geyser.
How Narcissus Geyser Got Its Name
The Narcissus Geyser was named in the 1880s by a group of explorers called the Hague Party. They named it after a famous character from ancient Greek myths, Narcissus.
In the myth, Narcissus was known for being very handsome. He loved to look at his own reflection in a pool of water. The explorers likely thought the geyser's beauty or how its water looked reminded them of this story.
Eruptions of Narcissus Geyser
Narcissus Geyser has two main types of eruptions: minor and major.
- Minor eruptions usually last for about 5 to 8 minutes. During these eruptions, the water can shoot up to 20 feet (about 6 meters) high.
- Major eruptions can last a bit longer, up to 15 minutes. The water in these eruptions reaches about 15 feet (about 4.5 meters) high.
After an eruption, the geyser usually rests for about 2 and a quarter hours to 6 hours before erupting again. This geyser can be a bit tricky to spot. It is located further away from the main road and is partly hidden by trees. Its cone has a pink color, just like Pink Geyser and Pink Cone Geyser. This suggests they might be connected underground, even though they don't seem to affect each other's eruptions.
