Narelle Autio, born in 1969, is a talented photographer from Australia. She is known for her amazing pictures. Narelle is part of a group called In-Public that focuses on street photography. She also helped start Oculi, a special photo agency. She is married to another photographer, Trent Parke, and they often work together. Narelle has won many important awards for her photography. These include two Walkley Awards, two World Press Photo awards, and the Oskar Barnack Award.

Early Life and Learning

Narelle Autio was born in 1969. Her hometown is Henley Beach, near Adelaide in Australia.

She studied visual arts at the University of South Australia. Narelle finished her degree in 1990.

Her Photography Career

Narelle Autio started her career as a photojournalist in 1991. A photojournalist takes pictures for newspapers and magazines. She worked at the Adelaide Advertiser newspaper.

In 1994, she left Adelaide and traveled a lot. She worked for big newspapers in the UK and USA. She also took photos for News Limited's office in London.

Narelle came back to Australia in 1998. She lived in Sydney and worked for the Sydney Morning Herald. She was a main photographer there until 2003. Her work included taking pictures at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

In 1999, Narelle and her husband, Trent Parke, started a photo project. It was called The Seventh Wave. They took pictures of people in the ocean, often underwater. Many of these photos were in black and white. They worked on this project for two years. They visited beaches like Bondi and Manly Beach in Sydney. They also went to places like Port Macquarie and Byron Bay.

After that, in 2002, she created Not of this Earth. In 2004, her solo show Watercolours explored Australians enjoying their free time. In 2010, she showed The Summer of Us. This project looked at what people leave behind on the beach.

Narelle Autio joined the In-Public street photography group in 2001. Street photography means taking pictures of everyday life in public places. She also helped start Oculi, which is a group of photographers. Her photos are shared by Agence Vu.

In 2018, Narelle and Trent Parke worked with filmmaker Matthew Bate. They made an eight-screen video artwork. It was called The Summation of Force. This artwork was shown at the 2018 Adelaide Film Festival. A special virtual reality version was also shown at the Sundance Film Festival in the US. The artwork was shown in many countries. It won an award at the Imagine Film Festival in Amsterdam.

As of 2025, Narelle Autio lives and works in Adelaide.
