History of Nashoba

A United States Post Office first opened in Nashoba on September 13, 1886. At that time, this area was known as Indian Territory. The community got its name from Nashoba County, which was part of the Choctaw Nation. The word nashoba comes from the Choctaw language and means "wolf." Because of this, Nashoba County was often called Wolf County.

Before Oklahoma became a state, parts of the Nashoba area were in Nashoba County, Choctaw Nation. When Oklahoma officially became a state on November 16, 1907, Nashoba County was dissolved. Its land was then divided and became part of McCurtain County and Pushmataha County.
