What Was the National Defense Junta?
The National Defense Junta was a temporary government formed by military officers. It was created during the early days of the Spanish Civil War. This group made decisions for the areas they controlled.
It was a way for the Nationalist military leaders to organize themselves. They needed a way to govern and direct their forces during the war.
How the Junta Started
The Spanish Civil War began on July 18, 1936. This happened when some military officers tried to take control of the country. Their attempt to overthrow the government, called the Second Spanish Republic, did not fully succeed.
Because the coup failed, a long and difficult war started. On July 25, the leaders of the Nationalist side officially formed the National Defense Junta. They wanted to create a clear leadership for their cause.
Choosing a New Leader
The leaders of the Nationalist side met to decide who would be their main leader. This meeting took place on September 21, 1936. Several important generals were considered for the role.
Among them were President Miguel Cabanellas and Francisco Franco. Other key figures like Emilio Mola and Gonzalo Queipo de Llano were also candidates. Many people at the meeting supported Franco to become the sole leader.
On September 30, 1936, Franco was officially named the supreme caudillo of Spain. This meant he became the ultimate leader of the Nationalist movement. After this, the National Defense Junta was no longer needed and was dissolved.
Miguel Cabanellas did not agree with Franco becoming the sole leader. He warned other generals that Franco would not give up power once he had it. The National Defense Junta was then replaced by another group called the Technical Junta of the State.
