  • The Ashland Cemetery is a historic burial ground at the junction of E. Main and Morton Sts. It was listed in 1995.
  • The Ashland Depot Hotel, South Wing at 624 A St. was listed in 1991.
  • The Ashland Downtown Historic District covers a large area of downtown Ashland. It was recognized in 2000 for its important buildings.
  • The Ashland Masonic Lodge Building at 25 N. Main St. became historic in 1992.
  • The Ashland Municipal Powerhouse is an old power station in Ashland Creek Canyon, listed in 1987.
  • The Ashland Oregon National Guard Armory at 208 Oak St. was added in 1987.

Jacksonville's Gold Rush History

Jacksonville was founded in 1852 as a mining town during the gold rush. It became a very important center for money and trade in southern Oregon.

  • The Walter Bowne House at 1845 Old Stage Rd. was listed in 1990.
  • The Frank E. Bybee House at 4491 Jacksonville Hwy. was added in 1981.
  • The William Bybee House at 883 Old Stage Rd. was listed in 1977.
  • The Jacksonville Historic District covers the entire city limits of Jacksonville. It's a National Historic Landmark, recognized in 1966. This means it's one of the most important historic places in the whole country! It's special because it looks much like it did in the mid-1800s.
  • The Jacksonville-to-Fort Klamath Military Wagon Road south of Butte Falls was listed in 1979.
  • The McKee Bridge Campground on Upper Applegate Rd. was added in 2000.
  • The John Orth House at 105 W. Main St. was listed in 1972.
  • The Rich Gulch Diggings about 0.75 miles southwest of Jacksonville were added in 2000.
  • The Squaw Peak Lookout about 25 miles south of Jacksonville was listed in 2000.
  • The Star Ranger Station Building, Old at 6941 Upper Applegate Rd. was added in 2000.

Central Point and Other Towns

  • The Robert Vinton Beall House at 1253 Beall Lane in Central Point was listed in 1979.
  • The Victor and Bertha Bursell House at 3075 Hanley Rd. in Central Point was added in 1982.
  • The A. S. V. and Helen Bundy Carpenter House at 1677 Old Stage Rd. in Central Point was listed in 2005.
  • The Central Point Public School at 450 S. 4th St. in Central Point was added in 1980.
  • The E. Raymond Driver House at 4140 Old Stage Rd. in Central Point was listed in 1990.
  • The Edward Charles Faber House at 445 Manzanita St. in Central Point was added in 1997.
  • The Fort Lane Military Post Site in Central Point was listed in 1988.
  • The Madden–McCaskey House at 3347 Old Stage Rd. in Central Point was added in 1994.

  • The John B. White House at 86 N. River Rd. in Gold Hill was added in 1978.
  • The Antelope Creek Covered Bridge on Little Butte Creek in Eagle Point was listed in 2012.
  • The Eagle Point National Cemetery at 2763 Riley Road in Eagle Point was added in 2016.
  • The Dead Indian Soda Springs Shelter near the end of S. Fork Little Butte Cr. Rd. in Eagle Point was listed in 2000.
  • The Snowy Butte Flour Mill at 402 N. Royal Avenue in Eagle Point was listed in 1976, but sadly it was destroyed by fire in 2015.
  • The Beeson–Foss Ranch at 6371 Wagner Creek Rd. in Talent was listed in 1999.
  • The Hanscom Hall at 201 Talent Ave. in Talent was added in 1996.
  • The Wagner Creek School at 8448 Wagner Creek Rd. in Talent was listed in 1992.
  • The Talent Elementary School at 206 Main Street in Talent was added in 2012.
  • The Glenview Orchard Ensemble at 1395 Carpenter Hill Rd. in Phoenix was listed in 1986.
  • The Patrick F. McManus House at 117 W. 1st St. in Phoenix was added in 1978.
  • The Camp White Station Hospital Administration Building at 8495 Crater Lake Highway in White City was listed in 2016.
  • The Big Elk Guard Station on FS Rd. 3706 near Ashland was listed in 2000.
  • The Buckhorn Mineral Springs Resort at 2200 Buckhorn Springs Rd. near Ashland was added in 1989.
  • The Butte Falls Ranger Station in Rogue River National Forest near Butte Falls was listed in 1986.
  • The Imnaha Guard Station in Rogue River National Forest near Butte Falls was added in 1986.
  • The Lodgepole Guard Station in Rogue River National Forest near Butte Falls was listed in 1991.
  • The Parker Meadows Shelter near Forest Rd. 37 near Butte Falls was added in 2000.
  • The Willow Prairie Cabin on FS Rd. 37 near Butte Falls was listed in 2000.
  • The Lost Creek Bridge southeast of Lake Creek was added in 1979.
  • The McKee Bridge south of Ruch was listed in 1979.
  • The Star Ranger Station east of Applegate R. near Ruch was added in 1991.
  • The Charles and Elizabeth Hatch House at 199 1st St. in Rogue River was listed in 2011.
  • The Mt. Stella Lookout near Prospect was added in 2000.
  • The Prospect Hotel at 39 Mill Creek Dr. in Prospect was listed in 1980. It's also known as the A.H. Boothby House.
  • The Union Creek Historic District on Oregon Route 62 near Prospect was added in 1980.
  • The Rogue Elk Hotel at 27390 OR 62 in Trail was listed in 1980.

Former Historic Places

Sometimes, a place that was once on the National Register of Historic Places might be removed from the list. This usually happens if the building is destroyed or changed so much that it no longer looks like it did historically.

Here are a few examples from Jackson County:

  • The David N. Birdseye House near Rogue River was listed in 1974 but removed in 1991 because it was destroyed by fire in 1990. However, it was later rebuilt using the original plans!
  • The Cargill Court Apartments in Medford were listed in 1990 but removed in 1994.
  • The Samuel Colver House in Phoenix was listed in 1990 but removed in 2009 after a fire destroyed it in 2008.
  • The Conro Fiero House in Central Point was listed in 1981 but removed in 2011. It was known as the Mon Desir restaurant when it was destroyed by fire in 2010.
  • The Medford Hotel was listed in 1985 but removed in 1988 after it was destroyed by fire.
  • The Wimer Bridge near Wimer was listed in 1979 but removed in 2006. The historic covered bridge collapsed in 2003, but a new replica bridge was built in 2008.

These former listings remind us that historic places need care and protection to stay around for a long time!
