Why Park City's Old Houses Are Special
Park City's old houses are super important because they are the largest and best-kept collection of homes from a metal mining town in Utah. They show us how people lived, what materials they used, and how the town grew during that time.
Most of these houses are small and simple. They belonged to the everyday people who worked hard in the mines. This is a big difference from the fancy houses and big buildings built in Salt Lake City for the mine owners.
These houses are also special because they are mostly made of wood. In Utah, most homes from that time were built with adobe, stone, or brick. So, Park City's wooden houses give us a unique look into how buildings were made back then.
Types of Mining Era Homes
In 1984, experts studied Park City's houses and found a few main types.
T/L Cottage Homes
One common type is called the "T/L cottage" or "cross-wing" house. Imagine a house shaped like the letter "T" or "L" when you look at it from above. There were 78 of these houses still standing in 1984. Some examples include the House at 463 Park Ave. and the Charles Meadowcroft House. A larger one is the Dr. William Bardsley House. Some houses became T or L shaped by adding rooms later.
Pyramid Houses
Another type is the "frame pyramid house." These homes have a roof that slopes up to a single point, like a pyramid. In 1984, 69 of these houses were still around. The House at 343 Park Avenue is a good example of a true pyramid house.
Hall and Parlor Houses
The third type is the hall and parlor house. This was one of the earliest types of homes built in Park City. These houses usually have two main rooms: a "hall" (living area) and a "parlor" (a more formal room). The Samuel D. Walker House is a two-story example. The Burt Kimball House was a one-story example, but it might not be standing anymore.
Shotgun Houses
A less common type of house found in Park City is the shotgun house. These are long, narrow homes where you can see straight through from the front door to the back door. There are fewer than 10 of these left. The Frank Hansen House and the House at 1101 Norfolk Avenue are two examples that were listed as historic.
