Mohamed Nazir bin Abdul Razak (born 19 November 1966) is a well-known Malaysian banking executive. He used to be the chairman of CIMB Group. CIMB is one of the biggest companies that provides financial services in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
He was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CIMB Group from 1999 to 2014. Nazir is the youngest son of Malaysia's second Prime Minister, Abdul Razak Hussein. He is also the brother of the sixth Prime Minister, Najib Razak.

Early Life and Education
Nazir was born in 1966 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His father passed away when Nazir was nine years old.
He went to St. John's Institution and Alice Smith School for his early education. Later, he continued his studies at Oundle School in the United Kingdom when he was 13.
Nazir earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Politics from the University of Bristol. He then went on to get a Master of Philosophy degree in Development Economics from Pembroke College, at the University of Cambridge. In 2009, he was a special fellow at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. His family background includes Bugis heritage.
Nazir Razak's Banking Career
After finishing his studies in the United Kingdom, Nazir came back to Malaysia. In 1989, he joined a company called Commerce International Merchant Bankers Berhad.
He worked his way up in the company. By 1999, he became the managing director and Chief Executive of the bank. The bank was known as CIMB by then. He served as CEO until 2014. After that, he became the chairman of CIMB until 2018.
Growing CIMB Group
When Nazir was the CEO, he helped CIMB Group grow a lot. It changed from a small Malaysian investment bank into a very large financial group.
CIMB became the second-largest financial services group in Malaysia. It also became the fifth-largest universal bank in Southeast Asia. It was known as the biggest investment bank in the Asia Pacific region. CIMB also became one of the largest Islamic banks in the world.
Temporary Leave and Return
In April 2016, Nazir took a voluntary leave from CIMB for one month. This happened while an independent review was being done. The review looked into a money transfer to his personal account from his brother, Najib.
After the review was finished by CIMB Group, Nazir was found to have done nothing wrong. He then returned to his role as CIMB Group chairman and as a director of CIMB Bank.
Other Important Roles
Besides being the Chairman of CIMB, Nazir held other important positions. From 2014 to 2018, he was a Director at Khazanah Nasional Berhad. This is Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund.
He was also a member of the Investment Panel of the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) from 2002 to 2017. The EPF helps people save for retirement. He also chaired the EPF's Investment Panel Risk Committee.
Since 2015, Nazir has been a member of the International Advisory Board. This board is part of the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford. In October 2016, he was chosen to be the first chairman of the World Economic Forum's ASEAN Regional Business Council. This council works to build trust and cooperation between governments and businesses in Southeast Asia.
Awards and Special Recognitions
During his time as the Group managing director and CEO of CIMB, Nazir received many awards. He was often named Malaysia's top executive or CEO.
In 2009, he received FinanceAsia's 'Lifetime Achievement Award'. He was the youngest person to ever get this award. In 2012, Euromoney gave him the 'Outstanding Achievement Award'. This was for his great contributions to the financial markets in Asia.
In October 2015, Asia House honored Nazir Razak with the Asia House Asian Business Leaders Award. He received this award for showing how working together can benefit Southeast Asia. This included his support for learning, research, and charity work. His business strategy also showed how a successful regional effort can bring people together for good.
Personal Life
Nazir was married to Azlina Aziz until 2023. Azlina is the daughter of Abdul Aziz Taha, who was a former governor of Bank Negara Malaysia (Malaysia's central bank). Nazir and Azlina have two children named Arman and Marissa.
On 17 November 2023, Nazir married Yati Zainuddin, who is a businesswoman. They first met when they were both studying in the UK.
