Neerlandia is a small community, called a hamlet, in central Alberta, Canada. It is part of the County of Barrhead No. 11. You can find Neerlandia where Highway 769 and Township Road 615A meet. It's about 20 kilometers north of Barrhead.
Dutch immigrants started Neerlandia in 1911. The name "Neerlandia" comes from "the Netherlands," which is where the first settlers were from. The area around Neerlandia is mostly farmland. Many people there work in farming, construction, or other jobs.
History of Neerlandia
In January 1911, a man named Henry Kippers started a group. Its goal was to help Dutch people move and create a farming community. On December 18, 1911, 16 men applied for land permits in Edmonton, Alberta.
These first settlers included John Anema, Rients de Jager, and Willem van Ark. More people, like Fred Baron and Arie Emmerzael, joined them soon after. This helped the new community grow.
Population of Neerlandia
In 1991, Statistics Canada counted the people living in Neerlandia. The population recorded in the 1991 Census was 101 people.
