Most of the Nenets Okrug has a Subarctic climate. This means the summers are short and mild. The winters are very long and extremely cold.
A large part of the region is also above the Arctic Circle. This means that every year, they experience polar night. During polar night, the sun does not rise for many days.

Many different groups of people live in the Nenets Okrug. In 2010, most people were Russians, making up about 66.1% of the population. The Nenets are the native people of this area. They made up 18.6% of the population. The Komi people were 9.0% of the population. Other groups made up the remaining 6.3%.
The population of the Nenets Okrug was highest in 1989, with 54,840 people. After that, the number of people living there went down quickly. Since 2002, the population has slowly started to grow again.
