The Nepton River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into Chibougamau Lake. This lake is part of the larger Nottaway River system. The Nepton River is located in the Nord-du-Québec region, specifically in the area known as Eeyou Istchee James Bay.

The entire river flows through an area called McCorkill Township. A forest road helps people get to the river's eastern side. This road connects to Route 167, which also serves Waconichi Lake.

During the colder months, the Nepton River usually freezes. It's typically frozen from early November until mid-May. However, it's safest to walk or travel on the ice from mid-November to mid-April.

River's Journey

The Nepton River starts from an unnamed lake in McCorkill Township. This lake is about 475 meters (1,558 feet) above sea level. From its start, the river flows for about 18.4 kilometers (11.4 miles).

Here's how the river flows:

  • It first goes southwest for 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles). During this part, it crosses Nepton Lake.
  • Then, it turns west for 2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles). Here, another river, the Nepton River North, joins it.
  • Next, it flows southwest for 4.8 kilometers (3 miles) until it reaches a forest road.
  • It then goes west for 3.4 kilometers (2.1 miles), making a curve to the south. Here, water from Demers Lake flows into it.
  • Finally, it travels southwest for 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles) until it reaches its mouth.

The Nepton River ends in a narrow bay on the northeast side of Chibougamau Lake. This bay is connected to other parts of the lake, like the Bay of Islands and Girard Bay.

Where the Water Goes Next

Once the Nepton River's water enters Chibougamau Lake, it continues its long journey. The water flows west through the lake, passing many islands. Chibougamau Lake is a very important lake because it's the main source for the Chibougamau River.

From Chibougamau Lake, the water goes into Lac aux Dorés. Then, it flows southwest through the Chibougamau River. This river eventually meets the Opawica River. After this meeting, the water flows southwest again through the Waswanipi River.

The Waswanipi River then crosses Goéland Lake and flows into Matagami Lake. Finally, the water flows along the Nottaway River and empties into Rupert Bay. Rupert Bay is a part of James Bay.

River's Name

The name "Nepton River" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This was the same day the Commission de toponymie du Québec was founded. This commission is in charge of naming places in Quebec.
