About Netherley: A Green Community
Netherley is mainly a place where people live. It's on the eastern side of Liverpool. A large part of the area, about 44%, is made up of "green belt" land. This means it's protected from too much building, which helps keep the area green and open.
A sports field in Netherley, called Caldway Drive, is now home to the Belle Vale Junior Football League. They moved here because a new school was being built on their old playing fields in nearby Belle Vale.
Netherley's Past: How It Grew
Netherley was built on what used to be farmland. This happened in 1968. New homes were created for families who moved from older, less suitable houses in the center of Liverpool.
A school called Lee Manor High School was built in 1970. It was first known as Netherley Community Comprehensive School. The school changed its name in the early 1990s. Sadly, it closed down in the year 2000.
Between 1983 and 1985, many of Netherley's old flats and maisonettes were taken down. This made space for newer houses to be built. In 2003, a company called Lee Valley Housing started looking after many of the homes. They made lots of improvements to about 1,700 houses.
Local Jobs and Businesses
Netherley lost a big local employer in 2006. This was a company called HPL Jars & Containers. They had been in the area for over thirty years. Another company, M&H Plastics, bought them out. Production then moved away from Netherley.
Learning in Netherley
There are good schools in Netherley. St. Gregory's Catholic Primary School got a great report from Ofsted in 2005. Ofsted checks how well schools are doing. This school was built at the same time as the local homes. It has changed over the years to meet the needs of the area. For example, it welcomed many students from Cross Farm School when that school closed. Norman Pannell Primary School is also a popular school in Netherley.
