Netstal was once a separate town, or municipality, in Switzerland. It is located in the canton of Glarus. Since January 1, 2011, Netstal has been part of the larger municipality of Glarus.

Netstal covers an area of about 10.7 square kilometers (4.1 square miles). A big part of this land, about 30.8%, is used for farming. Forests cover another 32.8% of the area.

About 9.6% of Netstal's land has buildings or roads on it. The remaining 26.9% is made up of natural features. These include rivers, glaciers, and mountains.

Netstal is located in a central part of the Glarus region. It sits at the base of the Wiggis mountain. Here, the Löntsch river, which flows from the Klöntal lake, joins the Linth river. Netstal is made up of smaller areas called Netstal, Leuzingen, and Löntschen.

As of 2010, Netstal had a population of 2,875 people. About 25.4% of the people living here were from other countries in 2007. Over the past ten years, the population has grown a little, by about 2.3%.

Most people in Netstal speak German, about 79.9% of them. Italian is the second most common language, spoken by 6.9% of the population. Albanian is the third most common, spoken by 4.1%.

In the 2007 federal election, the most popular political party was the SPS. They received 50.8% of the votes. The SVP was also popular, getting 39.7% of the votes.

Many adults in Netstal have a good education. About 59.4% of people aged 25-64 have finished high school or gone on to higher education. This includes university or a special college called a Fachhochschule.

Netstal has a low unemployment rate of 1.51%. This means most people who want to work can find jobs. In 2005, many people worked in different types of jobs.

Getting Around Netstal

Netstal railway station is an important stop on the railway line that goes from Weesen to Linthal. This station is served by two train lines. The Zürich S-Bahn service S25 travels between Linthal and Zürich. The St. Gallen S-Bahn service S6 runs between Rapperswil and Schwanden.

As of December 2023, both train services run once every hour. This means that between Ziegelbrücke and Schwanden, you can usually find two trains per hour.
