Ennenda was once a town, or "municipality," in the canton of Glarus in Switzerland. Think of a canton like a state or a large region. From January 1, 2011, Ennenda became part of the larger town of Glarus.
History of Ennenda
Ennenda was first mentioned a very long time ago, around the years 1303-1307. Back then, it was known by names like Obront-Ennant-A and Nydern-Ennant-A.
During the 1800s, Ennenda grew into a busy place for making things. It was especially known for its textile industry, which means making cloth and fabrics. You can still see some beautiful old houses and villas from that time in the village.
Geography of Ennenda
Ennenda covers an area of about 22.2 square kilometers (about 8.6 square miles). A big part of this land, about 35.5%, is used for farming. Forests cover another 37.7% of the area.
About 3.8% of the land has buildings or roads on it. The rest, about 23%, is made up of things like rivers, glaciers, or mountains that aren't used for farming or building.
Ennenda is located on the right side of the Linth river. It sits across from the town of Glarus and is at the bottom of the Schilt mountain. The area includes the main village of Ennenda. It also has smaller settlements called hamlets, like Sturmigen and Ennetbühls. There's even a mountain settlement called Ennetberge.
People of Ennenda
In 2010, Ennenda had a population of 2,684 people. About 14.2% of the people living there in 2007 were from other countries. Over the past 10 years, the number of people living in Ennenda has gone down a little.
Most people in Ennenda speak German, which is about 87.6% of the population. Italian is the second most common language, spoken by 3.7% of people. Albanian is third, spoken by 2.8%.

Transport in Ennenda
Ennenda railway station is a train station in Ennenda. It is on the railway line that goes from Weesen to Linthal.
Two train services stop at Ennenda:
- The Zürich S-Bahn service S25 travels between Linthal and Zürich.
- The St. Gallen S-Bahn service S6 travels between Rapperswil and Schwanden.
As of December 2023, both of these train services run once every hour. This means that between Ziegelbrücke and Schwanden, you can usually find two trains per hour.
