New Boston is a small village located in Scioto County, Ohio, United States. It sits right along the Ohio River. In 2020, about 2,298 people lived there.

This village is almost completely surrounded by the larger city of Portsmouth. The only side not touching Portsmouth is its southern border, which is the Ohio River. New Boston has its own local school district, the New Boston Local School District. It also uses the Portsmouth Public Library.

History of New Boston

New Boston was officially created on February 17, 1891. Three people named James Skelton, A.T. Holcomb, and M. Stanton planned out the village. They decided to name it after Boston, Massachusetts. This was because many of the first people who settled here came from that famous city.

Geography and Location

New Boston is a small place. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village covers about 1.14 square miles (2.95 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 1.11 square miles (2.87 square kilometers). A very small part, about 0.03 square miles (0.08 square kilometers), is water.

As mentioned, New Boston is almost entirely surrounded by the city of Portsmouth. Portsmouth is to its west, north, and east. The only side not touching Portsmouth is the south, where the Ohio River flows.
