New Garden is a small, unincorporated community in Ohio, United States. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town. It's located in Hanover Township within Columbiana County. You can find New Garden along Ohio State Route 172, about 9 miles (14 km) west of Lisbon.
A Look Back: New Garden's Story
New Garden was first planned and settled in 1810. A post office opened here in 1830. It helped people send and receive mail for many years. The post office stayed open until 1893.
In 1824, a Quaker missionary named Stephen Grellet visited New Garden. He wrote about his journey in his memoirs. He mentioned feeling sad during his visit.
An important group called the American Anti-Slavery Society had a local branch in New Garden. This group worked to end slavery in the United States. They formed their local group here in 1834.
In 1848, a famous African-American writer and leader, Martin Delany, traveled through New Garden. He was reporting on the lives of free black people. He wrote that the black farmers in New Garden were "respectable and praiseworthy." This shows they were doing well and were respected.
New Garden is also home to a covered bridge. This bridge is 28 feet (8.5 m) long. It was built in 1978 and is located at the Eagle Pass Golf Course.
