New Harmony is a small, unincorporated community in Smith County, Texas. This means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own city government. The heart of this community is the New Harmony Baptist Church, which has been around for over 150 years!

New Harmony: A Community's Story

How New Harmony Began

The community of New Harmony started in 1867. This was right after the American Civil War had ended. A group of 18 adults and one child decided they needed a new place to worship. They met on April 20, 1867, and formed a church. They first called it "Harmony."

The church was about 12 miles northwest of Tyler, Texas. When they tried to join the Cherokee Baptist Association, they found another church already had the name "Harmony." So, they changed their name to "New Harmony Baptist Church." Their new name was accepted, and the church became an important part of the area.

The Church Buildings Over Time

The first church building was put up where the New Harmony Cemetery is now. Later, a second church was built across the road. Natural springs behind the church provided water for baptisms.

On December 21, 1907, the church moved into its third building. A storm damaged this building in 1915. So, a fourth church building was built. It cost only $330.35! This building was used for 34 years.

The fifth church building was built in 1949. Since then, the church has added seven major parts. A new main worship area was built in 1993. The older worship area was kept and turned into Sunday School rooms and a library. In its 150-year history, the church has had only 37 pastors. Only two pastors have served in the last 50 years.

A Strong Community Through the Years

The church has been a central place for its members to grow and learn. It has also shared its message of peace and hope with people locally, across Texas, and even around the world.

The community and church have lived through many big events. These include World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and the Iraq War. During these times, the church community stayed strong. Records show that 40 members served during World War II. The church prayed for them, and every soldier returned home safely.

The people of New Harmony have always prayed for their neighbors and for the world. Over 150 years, the church has faced many challenges. These include personal struggles, local issues, and national problems. Through it all, the members have relied on their beliefs and shown kindness to others. They have remembered their faith during hard times and good times.
