New Lebanon is a small town in Columbia County, New York, United States. It is located about 24 miles (39 km) southeast of Albany, the capital city of New York State. In 2020, about 2,514 people lived there.
The town of New Lebanon is in the very northeastern part of Columbia County. The main part of the town is where two important roads meet: U.S. Route 20 and New York State Route 22.

History of New Lebanon
New Lebanon was officially created in 1818. It was formed from a part of the town of Canaan.
The Shakers in New Lebanon
New Lebanon was a very important place for a religious group called the Shakers. It was their main spiritual home. In 1864, the Mount Lebanon Shaker Society had 609 members living there.
Today, some of the oldest Shaker buildings are part of the Shaker Museum | Mount Lebanon. Other buildings are now used by the Darrow School, which is a boarding school. Some buildings have also become a spiritual retreat center called the Abode of the Message. This center was once the home of Vilayat Inayat Khan, a spiritual leader. Now, it is the home of the current leader of the Inayati Order, Zia Inayat Khan.

Besides the Mount Lebanon Shaker Society, several other buildings in New Lebanon are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important historical sites. These include:

Geography of New Lebanon
New Lebanon covers a total area of about 35.95 square miles (93.10 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a small part being water.
The northern border of the town touches Rensselaer County. The eastern border is the state line with Berkshire County, Massachusetts.
Lebanon Spring
There is a special warm thermal spring in New Lebanon called Lebanon Spring. It is located on Spring Hill Road. Native Americans used this spring long ago.

Communities and Locations
New Lebanon is made up of several smaller communities and areas:
- Darrow School – This is a school that used to be only for boys but is now for both boys and girls. It is a boarding school.
- Lebanon Springs – This is a small village, or hamlet, located northeast of the main New Lebanon village on Route 22.
- New Britain – You can find this hamlet in the southwestern part of the town.
- New Lebanon – This is the main hamlet of New Lebanon, located in the eastern part of the town.
- New Lebanon Center – This hamlet is located west of the main New Lebanon village.
- The Abode of the Message – This is a place where people live together in a spiritual community. It also hosts conferences and offers spiritual studies.
- West Lebanon – This hamlet is in the northwestern part of the town, along Route 20.
Notable People from New Lebanon
- Samuel J. Tilden – He was a famous politician from New York. He ran for U.S. president in 1876. He won the popular vote, meaning more people voted for him, but he lost the election to Rutherford B. Hayes because of how the electoral college works.
- George Henry Williams – He was a lawyer and a judge.
