History of New Lisbon
The area where New Lisbon now stands was once a winter camp for the Ho-Chunk people. They are a Native American tribe. They called this place Waac Hot’ųp Ra or Waac Hožu Ra. This means "where canoes are placed" or "boat launch." The United States gained this land from the Ho-Chunk nation in a treaty signed in 1836.
Early Settlers and Mills
The first European settlers arrived in 1838. Their names were Amasa Wilson and C.B. Smith. They came to cut down trees for lumber. Wilson and Smith chose the New Lisbon site for a log boom on the Lemonweir River. A log boom is like a fence in the water that holds logs together. They built a sawmill there in 1842-1843. A sawmill is a place where logs are cut into planks.
In 1855, Amasa Wilson planned out the village. It was first called Mill Haven. Later, its name changed to New Lisbon. This might have been suggested by Larmon Saxton, who was from Lisbon, Ohio. In 1857, a railroad line connected to the community. This helped the village grow. New Lisbon officially became a city in March 1870.
