New Ross is a small town located in Walnut Township, Montgomery County, in the state of Indiana, United States. According to the 2020 census, the town had a population of 309 people.

History of New Ross
New Ross has an interesting history, starting with its post office and original name.
Early Days and Name Change
In 1836 or 1837, a post office was first set up in Walnut Township. It was located at the home of the postmaster, George Dorsey, and was called the New Ross Post Office. The area that is now New Ross was first planned out by John Browning in 1855. Back then, it was known as Valley City.
Around 1868, the post office moved to Valley City. To make things simpler, the town's name was changed to New Ross to match the post office. New Ross officially became an incorporated town in May 1870. This means it became its own legal entity with its own local government.
Community and Landmarks
In 1874, a Methodist church was built in New Ross. It was named Brown Chapel. This church was named after Rev. Thomas J. Brown, who was the first person to preach there.
An old map from 1864 shows that the area where New Ross is now was once called "Mace." However, this name disappeared from maps later on. Today, there is another unincorporated area called Mace, which is located northwest of New Ross.

New Ross is located in the southeastern part of Montgomery County.
Location and Roads
U.S. Route 136 is a main road that goes through the town. If you travel northwest on this road, you will reach Crawfordsville, which is about 11 miles away. Crawfordsville is the county seat, meaning it's the main town where the county government is located. If you go southeast on U.S. Route 136, you will reach Indianapolis, about 33 miles away.
Land and Water
The U.S. Census Bureau reports that New Ross covers a total area of 0.30 square miles (0.77 square kilometers). All of this area is land. The town gets its water drained by small streams that flow into Big Raccoon Creek. This creek passes just south of New Ross and eventually flows southwest to the Wabash River near Montezuma.

Public schools in New Ross are managed by the South Montgomery Community School Corporation. Walnut Elementary School serves younger students in the area. For older students, Southmont Junior High School and Southmont High School provide secondary education.
Notable People from New Ross
New Ross has been home to some interesting individuals:
- Elizabeth Miller (1878–1961) was a novelist.
- Howie Williams was a basketball player. He won a gold medal in basketball at the 1952 Olympic Games. He was also a three-time AAU National Champion and played basketball for the All-Big Ten team twice. He graduated from New Ross High School in 1946.
