New Salem is a city in Morton County, North Dakota, United States. It is part of the larger Bismarck area. The city was founded in 1883. In 2020, about 973 people lived there.

New Salem's History

New Salem started in April 1882. A man named John Christiansen was the first to arrive. He stepped off a train and found himself in an empty area.

Soon after, a group from Chicago helped more settlers move to the area. They formed a colony and bought their independence for $600. Buildings like a church, a land office, and stores were quickly built. By the end of 1883, New Salem was ready for life on the Great Plains.
