History of New Sarepta
How New Sarepta Got Its Name
The name Sarepta has a long history! An ancient city called Sarepta was located on the coast of what is now Lebanon. This city was also mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible as Zarephath.
Later, in the 1700s, a group of people called the Moravian Brethren from Germany started a village in Russia named Sarepta. About a century later, many of these Moravians decided to move away. Some of them traveled all the way to Canada.
These settlers, who were part of the Germans from Russia community, wanted to start a new home. They chose the name Sarepta to honor their old village. The government officially named the settlement Sarepta on October 2, 1904. When Alberta became a province in 1905, "New" was added to the name. This helped tell it apart from another place in Ontario and also showed it was a fresh start for the community.
