New St Leonard's Church is a beautiful church located on Whalley New Road. You can find it between the villages of Langho and Billington in Lancashire, England. It's an active Anglican church, meaning it's part of the Church of England. It serves as a parish church for the local community.
History of St Leonard's Church
This church was built a long time ago, between 1878 and 1880. It cost about £4,350 back then, which was a lot of money! The church was designed by famous architects named Paley and Austin from Lancaster. It was built to hold 346 people.
The new church was needed because the old one, Old St Leonard's Church, Langho, was about 1 mile (1.6 km) away. The number of people living in the area had grown. Many people had also moved closer to the railway line, which was south of the old church. The old church is not used for regular services anymore. However, it is looked after by the Churches Conservation Trust, and special services are still held there sometimes.
Church Design and Features
The church has a main area called the nave. It also has a south aisle, which is like a side section. There's a chancel at the east end, which is where the altar is usually found. A small room called a vestry is next to the chancel.
At the west end of the church, there's a bellcote made of slate. This is a small tower that holds the church bell. Below the east window, you can see a special pattern called flushwork. Inside, between the nave and the aisle, there's a row of arches called an arcade. These arches are supported by strong piers.
The church has lovely stained glass windows. These were made in 1935 by a company called Abbott and Company. There's also a large organ with two manuals (keyboards). It was built in 1882 by John Laycock. Later, it was updated by another company, J. W. Walker.
