New Vancouver, also known by its Kwak'wala names like Tzatsisnukomi, is a special community. It's home to the Kwakwaka'wakw people. You can find it on Harbledown Island in the Queen Charlotte Strait. This area is part of the beautiful Central Coast of British Columbia. It's also close to another community called Alert Bay.

New Vancouver is the main village for a group of Kwakwaka'wakw people called the Da'naxda'xw. The village sits at a spot called Dead Point. This is on the northern tip of Harbledown Island, right at the western end of Beware Passage.

Understanding the Name and History

The name Tzatsisnukomi comes from the Kwak'wala language. It means "eelgrass in front." Eelgrass is a type of plant that grows in the ocean. This name likely describes what the area looked like.

Who Settled New Vancouver?

The land where New Vancouver is located originally belonged to the Mamalilikulla people. However, in 1891, two other groups, the Da'naxda'xw and the Aweatatla, moved here. They came from a place called Kalugwis. These groups built their homes on what became known as Dead Point Indian Reserve No. 5.

It's not fully clear how this move happened. We don't know if the Mamalilikulla people invited them to settle there. We also don't know if the land was bought from them. What we do know is that these groups made New Vancouver their home.
