Newbank is a neighborhood in the East End of Glasgow, Scotland. It is located very close to the home stadium of the famous football club Celtic F.C.. Newbank sits just north of the River Clyde, which is a major river in Scotland. It is next to an area called Parkhead and is bordered to the south by London Road. Today, Newbank is mostly made up of council houses, which are homes built and managed by the local government for people to rent. Its name comes from a large estate that was there in the 1700s.
Newbank's Story
The original 'Newbank House' was a big estate, but it no longer exists. However, there is a beautiful old school nearby called Newlands Primary School. It is made of red sandstone and was built in the 1800s. This school was a kind gift from Lord Newlands. He was a very generous person, and the school was named after him.
Homes in Newbank
The houses in Newbank are quite special for their design. Many of them are "4-in-a-block" council houses. This means four homes are built together in one building. These homes were a big improvement for people living in Glasgow's East End. They had full bathrooms and their own gardens, which was much better than the older "tenement flats." Tenement flats were large buildings with many small apartments, often sharing facilities. Some of the newer tenement flats in Newbank also had their own bathrooms inside, which was not common everywhere at the time.
Over time, many of the first Newbank houses have been taken down. This includes the old Belvedere Hospital, which was also near London Road. In the early 2000s, new homes were built in their place. These new homes include individual houses in Newbank and modern apartment buildings where the hospital used to be.
