Newbie is a small place located in Annandale South, close to the town of Annan in Scotland. It's known for having a factory that makes medicines, run by a company called Phoenix Chemicals.

Newbie is also a starting point for the Annandale Way, which is a long walking path. This path begins at Newbie Barns, a small group of homes in the area.

A Glimpse into Newbie's Past

Newbie has an interesting history, especially concerning its role in border affairs between Scotland and England.

Royal Visits and Border Issues

In November 1597, James VI of Scotland visited this area. He came to solve problems along the border between Scotland and England. These borders were often places of conflict and needed careful management.

During his visit, King James VI held a special meeting, called a council. Many important people joined him, including the Duke of Lennox and the Earl of Glencairn. An English official named Henry Leigh, who helped manage the border, also came to Newbie to meet the King.

Local Leadership and the Johnston Family

The local leader of Newbie at that time was John Johnston. He was also an important official who helped manage the Scottish side of the border. His family, the Johnstons, were very influential in the area.

The Story of Newbie Castle

Newbie was once home to a strong building called a tower house or castle. This castle belonged to the Johnston family and later to the Earls of Hartfell. Sadly, the castle was eventually taken down.

When the castle was demolished, some of its stones were saved. These special stones, called quoins, had unique carvings on them. These carvings showed a style popular in Scotland during the Renaissance period. Today, you can still see some of these old castle stones in newer farm buildings around Newbie. They are a reminder of the castle that once stood there.
