Newfield is a town in Tompkins County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 5,184 people lived there. The town's name comes from the many empty areas of land that used to be there.

The Town of Newfield is in the southwest part of Tompkins County. It is located southwest of Ithaca, New York.

History of Newfield

Newfield was first created in 1811. This was even before Tompkins County was formed. It was originally part of the Town of Spencer in Tioga County and was called the "Town of Cayuta." In 1822, the town changed its name to Newfield.

During the Great Depression (a time when many people had financial difficulties), many farms were left empty. These lands were then used for conservation, meaning they were protected for nature. Newfield is special because it has one of the few remaining covered bridges in New York State. This bridge, called the Newfield Covered Bridge, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

Geography of Newfield

Newfield covers about 59 square miles (152.73 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a small part being water.

The southern and western borders of the town are also the border of Schuyler County, New York.

New York State Route 13 is a main highway that runs through Newfield from northeast to southwest. Two other roads, New York State Route 34 and New York State Route 96, join together to form a north-south highway in the eastern part of the town.
