High School Fire in 1991

On November 7, 1991, a big fire broke out at the Marshall County Central High School. The fire started very early in the morning, around 3:38 a.m. Firefighters from five different areas came to help put out the blaze. The fire burned for over five hours and destroyed about two-thirds of the school building.

At first, the state education department said the school could not be rebuilt. But the people of Newfolden didn't give up! They wrote letters, made phone calls, and signed a petition. Their hard work paid off, and the state approved rebuilding the school. While the new high school was being built, students in grades 7-12 had classes in the town's community center, churches, and parts of the elementary school. The new high school was finished and ready for students in September 1992.

Investigators found that the fire was caused by a faulty switch in a coffee maker. The school district later won a legal case related to the fire's cause.
