About Newland

Newland was officially named in May 2002. Its name comes from a very old land division called the Hundred of Newland. A "hundred" is a type of historical land area used for mapping and administration.

Newland's Location and Boundaries

The northern edge of Newland is marked by the Playford Highway. This road helps define where the locality begins and ends. Newland shares its borders with several other places on Kangaroo Island. These include Duncan to the north, Seddon to the east, and Vivonne Bay to the south. To the west, it borders Gosse and Karatta.

What is Newland Like?

Most of the land in Newland is used for primary production. This means people use the land to grow crops or raise animals, like farming. In the southwest part of Newland, there is a special area of about 18 hectares (44 acres) set aside for conservation. This area is called the Mount Taylor Conservation Park. Conservation means protecting nature, so this park helps keep the plants and animals safe.

How Newland is Governed

Newland is part of different government areas. For national elections, it falls within the federal division of Mayo. For state elections in South Australia, it is part of the state electoral district of Mawson. Locally, Newland is managed by the Kangaroo Island Council. This council helps make decisions about local services and rules for the area.
