Discovering Newmill's Past

How Newmill Was Planned

The way Newmill looks today, with its streets laid out in a specific pattern, was designed around 1759. This plan was created by the Earls of Fife, who were important landowners.

Early Days of the Village

Even before the planned layout, there was a settlement here. Records show that a meal mill was built in 1535 by Bishop Crystall. This mill helped grind grain into flour for the local people.

Castle and Church History

Long ago, a castle called Glengerrick stood where the village church is now. Today, that spot is a private home, but it reminds us of the area's ancient past.

Local Slate for Big Buildings

Slate from a quarry near Newmill was used in some very important building projects. It helped renovate Pluscarden Abbey, a historic monastery, and the Convent of Greyfriars in Elgin. This shows how local resources were used in the wider region.

The Newmill Institute

In 1905, the Newmill Literary Society built a special place called the Newmill Institute. They got help from a famous rich person, Andrew Carnegie, who gave money to many good causes. This building is now known as the Village Hall and is used for community events.

Remembering with the War Memorial

In the middle of the village square, you'll find a war memorial. It's a tall clock tower with four sections, built between 1922 and 1923. It was designed by F. A. Robertson and stands as a tribute to those who served.
