The Newport Tower is a very tall building in Newport, Jersey City, New Jersey. People also know it as Newport Office Center II or 525 Washington Boulevard. It is one of the tallest buildings in Jersey City and in all of New Jersey.

This impressive building has 37 floors and stands 531 feet (162 meters) tall. It is connected to a large shopping center called the Newport Centre Mall. This mall is one of the few big indoor shopping places in Hudson County.

The Newport Tower was built by Melvin Simon & Associates in 1990. It is located right next to the Hudson River. From the tower, you can look across the river and see Brookfield Place in Manhattan. The building has a modern design. Some people think it looks a bit like the Willis Tower (which used to be called Sears Tower) in Chicago, Illinois.

Building Updates

The Newport Tower has been updated a few times over the years. In the summer of 2005, the lobby got a new look. They added wooden panels to the walls and put LCD screens in the elevators for advertisements.

In July 2008, the row of columns in front of the building was removed. A new, smart elevator system called Schindler ID was put in place in September 2009. This system helps the elevators work more efficiently.

Who Owns the Tower?

On October 19, 2011, a company called Multi-Employer Property Trust bought the Newport Tower. They purchased it from Brookfield Properties for $377.5 million. Brookfield Properties had taken ownership of the tower in June 2006. This happened after they bought another company called Trizec Properties for $4.8 billion.
