Nguyen Van Thieu (pronounced Nwin Van Tee-oo) was an important leader of South Vietnam from 1965 to 1975. He was a general in the South Vietnamese army. He first led the country as part of a military group, and then he was elected president.
Thieu stopped being president on April 21, 1975, and left the country. A few days later, on April 30, 1975, the city of Saigon was taken over by North Vietnam. This event marked the end of the Vietnam War.
Later Life and Passing
Nguyen Van Thieu passed away in 2001 when he was 78 years old. He died in a hospital in Boston, USA. He had a stroke at his home in Foxborough. He was later cremated and buried in Boston.
