Nicolas Godin (born on December 25, 1969) is a French musician. He is best known for being one half of the popular music duo called Air.

Nicolas Godin's Early Life

Nicolas Godin was born in Paris, France. He studied architecture at a special school in Versailles. There, he met Jean-Benoît Dunckel, who would later become his music partner. Jean-Benoît was studying mathematics at the time.

Before they formed Air, Godin played in a band called Orange. He and Jean-Benoît have been making music together since they were teenagers in the 1980s.

How Air Began

At first, Air was a project started by Nicolas Godin alone. The name "Air" is a special kind of acronym. It stands for "Amour, Imagination, Rêve," which means "love, imagination, dream" in French.

A friend from his childhood asked Godin to write a song for a music collection. This collection was going to be released by a small French music label called Source. Godin recorded his song, "Modulor Mix," at home. It appeared on the Source Lab album in 1995. This song was later released again in 1996 by a British label.

The Music Duo Air

After his first song had some success, Godin asked his friend Jean-Benoît Dunckel to join him. Jean-Benoît was a talented pianist who had studied classical music. Together, they created more songs for the Source label. Some of their early songs included "J'ai Dormi Sous L'eau" and "Casanova 70."

In 1997, Source asked Air to record a full album. The duo spent several months in a recording studio near Paris. They worked with a sound engineer named Stéphane 'Alf' Briat to create their first big project.

Their first full album, Moon Safari, came out in 1998. It became very popular thanks to songs like "Kelly Watch the Stars" and "All I Need". The album mixed different sounds like synthesizers, strings, and guitars. This made it very unique in electronic music at the time. Moon Safari sold millions of copies, becoming a huge success in the United Kingdom and France.

Nicolas Godin's Solo Music

Besides his work with Air, Nicolas Godin has also released his own music. On September 18, 2015, he released his first solo album called Contrepoint. This album was inspired by the music of the famous composer Johann Sebastian Bach.

Godin also wrote the music for a French TV series called A Very Secret Service, which aired from 2015 to 2018. His second solo album, Concrete and Glass, was released on January 24, 2020.
