History of Le Chesnay

Le Chesnay has an interesting history, especially linked to Napoleon. On July 1, 1815, Napoleon's army, called the Grande Armée, fought its very last battle near Le Chesnay. This happened in the nearby town of Rocquencourt and also in Le Chesnay itself.

This battle took place after Napoleon's big defeat at the Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815. After Waterloo, Napoleon's army retreated towards Paris. The Prussian army, who were enemies of Napoleon, camped at Versailles.

While peace talks were happening, a French general named Rémi Joseph Isidore Exelmans was told to attack the Prussians. This attack happened on July 1, 1815, near Versailles. The Prussians had to retreat from Versailles. They tried to go east but were stopped by the French army.

Then, they tried to go to Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Some of their soldiers were attacked when they entered Rocquencourt. They tried to escape through the fields. But they were forced into a narrow street in Le Chesnay. Many were captured or killed there. However, most of the Prussian army managed to reach Saint-Germain.
