Nicole Beharie is an American actress known for her amazing roles in movies and TV shows. You might know her from films like American Violet (2008), 42 (2013), or Miss Juneteenth (2020). Early Life and Education
Nicole Beharie was born in West Palm Beach, Florida. Because her father worked for the United States Foreign Service, Nicole lived in many different countries when she was growing up. She spent time in the United Kingdom, Jamaica, Nigeria, and Panama.
She went to Orangeburg Wilkinson High School in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Later, she graduated from the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts & Humanities in Greenville, which is a special high school for talented students. Nicole then got into the famous Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied drama. She even received a scholarship to study Shakespeare in England!
Acting Career Highlights
Nicole Beharie started her film career in 2008 with the movie American Violet, where she played the main character. That same year, she appeared in the sports film The Express: The Ernie Davis Story. In 2010, she starred in the TV movie Sins of the Mother, playing a university student trying to fix her relationship with her mom.
Breakthrough Roles
In 2011, Nicole showed off her singing talent in the romantic movie My Last Day Without You, where she performed five original songs. She also acted in the film Shame, and critics praised her performance, calling her "a marvel of natural transparency."
A big role for Nicole came in 2013 when she played Rachel Robinson, the wife of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, in the historical movie 42. Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play in Major League Baseball.
Starring in Sleepy Hollow
Also in 2013, Nicole began her role as Abbie Mills in the Fox fantasy series Sleepy Hollow. This show was based on the classic story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". She was a main character for three seasons. Nicole left the show in 2016, and her character's story ended in the third season finale. She later shared that a health issue was one reason for her departure.
Recent Work and Recognition
In 2020, Nicole starred in the movie Miss Juneteenth. In this film, she played a former beauty pageant winner who helps her teenage daughter prepare for the same competition. Her performance in Miss Juneteenth earned her a Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Actress.
In 2023, Nicole joined the cast of the Apple TV+ drama series The Morning Show. Her role in this series was highly praised and led to her nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
