Nighthawk, Washington facts for kids

Nighthawk is a small place in Okanogan County, Washington, United States. It is not officially a town or city. Nighthawk is located along the Similkameen River. It might have been named after a nearby mine that is now closed. Another idea is that it was named after the nighthawk birds, which are common in the area.
About Nighthawk
Nighthawk used to be a place where people worked with wood and trees. It is found along the Loomis–Oroville Highway, which is west of Oroville. Just north of Nighthawk is a special place called the Nighthawk–Chopaka Border Crossing. This is where people can cross the border between Canada and the United States. This border crossing is open from 9 AM to 5 PM.
Nighthawk is also located along the path of the old Great Northern Railroad. At the start of the 1900s, Nighthawk was a very busy mining town. It had hotels and places for entertainment. Today, only about five people live there.
The border crossing is often called "the Nighthawk crossing" by people in Canada. However, the official name for the Canadian side of this area is Chopaka.
