A Look Back: History of Nijlen
Nijlen has a long and interesting past. In 1770, a special discovery was made here. People found a collection of old golden coins. These coins dated all the way back to the time of famous Roman leaders like Julius Caesar and Titus Flavius Domitianus.
The town of Nijlen was first written about in 1146. At that time, it was known to have connections with Tongerlo Abbey, an important religious place.
During the 16th century, a period called the Reformation brought many changes and conflicts to Europe. Nijlen was affected by this time of trouble. The village was damaged, and many people left, almost making it empty.
Things started to get better in the 18th century, when the number of people living in Nijlen began to grow. This growth sped up even more after 1853. That's when the railway station opened, connecting Nijlen to bigger cities like Antwerp and Herentals.
Around 1875, a new and important industry started in Nijlen: working with diamonds. Nijlen quickly became the second most important place for diamonds in Belgium, right after the city of Antwerp.
