Nikhil Baran Sengupta (born December 13, 1943 – died February 18, 2014) was a very talented Indian artist. He worked as an art director, actor, painter, and production designer in movies. He worked on films in Hindi, Bengali, and Oriya languages.
An art director is like the head artist for a movie. They decide how the sets will look, what colors to use, and how everything will be arranged. A production designer does similar work, planning the overall visual style of a film.
Nikhil Baran Sengupta started his film career as an art director in 1975 with the movie "Gapa hele be Sata". He helped make many successful films, like Janani (1984), Sahari Bagha (1985), Suna Chadhei (1987), and Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (2002).
He worked in the film industry for 40 years. During this time, he helped many young artists from Odisha get started in movies. He won the Best Art Director award in 1994 for Janani. In 2009, he received the Guru Kelu Charan award for his amazing work over his lifetime.

Early Life and Art Journey
Nikhil Baran Sengupta grew up in Cuttack, a big city in Odisha, India. He went to Ranihat School and later to Ravenshaw University. But his true passion was art.
To follow his dream, he moved to Kolkata. There, he studied art at the Government College of Art & Craft. After finishing his studies in 1969, he worked for advertising companies. He was a visualizer, which means he created ideas for ads. He also drew pictures for magazines.
He loved to paint and even had some art shows to display his work. But once he started working in the film industry, he became very busy. He focused all his energy on movies.
A Remarkable Film Career
Nikhil Baran Sengupta was a pioneer in the Oriya film industry. A pioneer is someone who is among the first to do something important. He worked on more than 100 films! These movies were in three different languages: Oriya, Bengali, and Hindi.
He also worked with 35 different directors. Some of these were very famous, like Aparna Sen, Buddhadeb Dasgupta, and Manmohan Desai. He was one of the few people from the Oriya film industry to work with such big names.
He won three State Awards for his art direction. These awards were for the films Hakim Baboo, Janani, and Hisab Nikas. His first big success was with Gapa Helebi Sata. This was the first color film made in the Oriya film industry. In 2008, he received the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Award. This award recognized him as an "Eminent Person" in cinema.
Personal Life
Nikhil Baran Sengupta was married to Bijoya Sengupta. They had two sons, Neel Sengupta and Biman Sengupta. When he wasn't busy with movie shoots, Nikhil da loved to paint. He especially enjoyed using watercolors. He passed away on February 18, 2014, at the age of 70.
