Manmohan Desai (born February 26, 1937 – died March 1, 1994) was a famous Indian film producer and director. He was one of the most successful filmmakers in the 1970s and 1980s. Desai is now seen as a very important director in Bollywood. He was a pioneer in making a special kind of movie called "masala films."
Manmohan Desai's Family
Manmohan Desai came from a family with Gujarati roots. His father, Kikubhai Desai, was also a film producer. He owned Paramount Studios from 1931 to 1941. His father made many stunt films, like Circus Queen and Golden Gang.
Manmohan Desai's older brother, Subhash Desai, became a producer in the 1950s. He gave Manmohan his first chance to direct a Hindi film called Chhalia in 1960. Subhash later produced other movies that Manmohan directed, such as Bluff Master and Dharam Veer.
Manmohan Desai was married to Jeevanprabha Desai. She passed away in 1979. Later, he was engaged to the actress Nanda from 1992 until his death. He had one son, Ketan Desai, who also works in the film industry. Ketan is married to Kanchan Kapoor. Kanchan is the daughter of famous actors Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali.
Manmohan Desai passed away on March 1, 1994. He had been suffering from chronic back pain.
